Everything New in iOS 15 Beta 3: Improved Safari Search, Address Bar Relocation, and Reload

Apple today released the third betas of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, and the company is continuing to fine-tune the update's suite of new features. There have been numerous complaints about Safari on iOS, so Apple has made some changes in the third beta.

Safari Lookup

When you tap a URL bar in a Safari tab, the interface for entering another URL or search term has been moved above the keyboard. It was previously located at the top of the start page. The search interface has been improved as well.

reload safari

Long pressing on a floating tab bar now initiates a reload, which is an alternative to using the built-in menu option.

When you reload a tab in Safari, it gains a permanent reload icon, which can be tapped to refresh the page. The reload icon appears only in portrait mode on the iPhone, but it appears in both portrait and landscape mode on the iPad. Making the button appear necessitates an initial reload, which Apple may simplify in the future.

Updates to Safari for iPadOS 15

Because the new Safari features introduced in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey were not brought to the iPad, iPadOS 15 beta 3 provides the same Safari experience as beta 2. Apple, on the other hand, intends to include Safari updates in a future version of iPadOS 15, thereby improving the iPad's usage experience.

According to John Gruber of Daring Fireball, some of the changes introduced in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey will also be included in iPadOS 15.

The good news is that today's betas show that Apple has taken criticism of the new Safari UI designs seriously; on MacOS, Safari now displays the tab bar as a separate UI element in the window, with only one URL address bar. (Similar changes are in the works for iPadOS, but they did not make it into today's beta.) Today's iOS changes aren't as significant, but based on conversations with Apple employees,

Splash Screen for the App Store

There is a new App Store splash screen that highlights new App Store features available in iOS 15, such as in-app events in apps and games, the App Store widget, and Safari Extensions on iOS.

Updates to the Focus

Apple has removed the Focus Status and Phone Calls options from the main Focus interface in the Settings app, relocating them to each Focus section.

Widget for Apple Music

Instead of using album art, the Apple Music widget now changes color and art based on the individual song that is playing. Thanks to a new "Paused" label, it's also easier to tell when a song is playing and when it's paused.

Resetting Your iPhone

The "Reset" button for the iPhone has been renamed "Transfer or Reset iPhone" in the Settings app's General section. The "Prepare for New iPhone" option is prominent in this interface. Prepare for New iPhone was an option in the previous beta, but Apple now assumes that the majority of users will use this section to set up a transfer to a new iPhone. All of the reset options for Network Settings, Keyboard Dictionary, Home Screen Layout, and other features remain, but are now grouped together under the "Reset" button.

Shortcuts

Background Sounds actions in the Shortcuts app allow you to set a sound track, adjust volume, tweak volume when media is playing, and more.
