The New Google Drive Will Make It Easier To Sync Your Desktop Files
Google's new Drive desktop app is expected to
replace both the Drive File Stream and Backup and Sync apps.
Google is
introducing the new Drive app, which will merge and replace the features of the
outgoing Drive File Stream and Backup and Sync apps in order to better manage
files for both home users and enterprise needs.
Google
explained in a recent blog post that the new Drive app is intended to be a
unified client that allows you to quickly and easily share and sync your files
across all of your devices and in the cloud. Home users have relied on the
Backup and Sync app for syncing and uploading files for the past few years (it
replaced the previous Drive app in 2017/2018). Businesses, on the other hand,
relied on the Drive File Stream app to manage their commercial storage needs.
Google is now
attempting to simplify its storage solutions with the new Drive app, which will
replace both of its existing home and enterprise apps with a single piece of
software that will support both Windows PCs and Macs.
Google claims
that the new Drive will include all of the best features of its previous
solutions, such as the ability to upload and sync photos and videos to Google
Photos and/or Google Drive, sync external storage devices with data from the
cloud, and mirror content between the cloud and your local devices, making any
potentially important files faster and easier to access.
The new Drive
app will also include new support for Google Drive shared folders, which was
previously unavailable in the Backup and Sync app. The Google Drive app is also
said to have scheduling integration with both Google Meet and Microsoft
Outlook.
Notably, it
appears Google is hoping to quickly transition users from its old apps to the
new Drive app, with Google stating that it will begin surfacing alerts asking
Backup and Sync users to switch to the Drive app “in the coming weeks,” with
Google recommending that users fully switch over by September.
After
September, Google says Backup and Sync users will receive a notification
informing them that they must transition to the Drive app to continue syncing
files, with the Backup and Sync app scheduled to cease operations on October 1.
While being
forced to switch from one app to another is always an annoyance, the new Drive
app combines the features of two apps into one, so the transition shouldn't be
too difficult and may even help people free up some space on their taskbars and
docks. Meanwhile, business users can find more information on what this transition
means for them here.
According to
Google, the transition to the new Drive app will begin next week, on July 19,
with ongoing prompts and notifications sent to Backup and Sync and Drive File
Stream users throughout the summer.
